"I think that there are a variety of disparate things happening across the country and at different levels of government," Samis said.
In the youngest age group, 41 per cent were overweight or obese, 29 per cent smoked, 2.5 per cent had high blood pressure and one per cent had diabetes.
Almost half of Canadians aged 20 to 34 were inactive, with the figure nearing 53 per cent for both adults aged 35 to 44 and 45 to 64.
In its annual report card on the heart health of Canadians, the organization said the looming phenomenon will place an unprecedented burden on Canada's cardiovascular care system, which already costs taxpayers $22 billion a year in direct and indirect expenses.
The survey is based on self reported data, information researchers understand isn't completely reliable. It has long been known that people tend to play down the negative and play up the positive when asked about themselves. For instance, Toronto cardiologist Dr. Beth Abramson said everyone she sees weighs a little more than they will admit to and is a bit shorter than they claim to be.
"This is a risk factor recipe for disaster."
results from that survey also conducted by Statistics Canada were released earlier this month.
He said the fact that younger adults are now starting to develop risk factors for heart disease factors that only showed up in previous generations once they hit middle age and beyond suggests that generation will experience events like heart attacks and strokes earlier than their parents and grandparents.
"You're sort of seeing the evidence of the Nintendo generation show up in these earlier risk factors," Tremblay said. "Whereas the older cohorts, who didn't live through the Nintendo generation . . . they seem to be a little bit more protected. Nike Flyknit Chukka Black Fsb
TORONTO Canada faces a "perfect storm" of cardiovascular disease, with younger adults at increased risk of earlier onset of heart disease and with the huge baby boom generation approaching their senior years, the Heart and Stroke Foundation warned Monday.
Rising number of Canadians young and old at risk for heart disease
Abramson said she sees it in the people she is treating. "The face of heart disease is changing. So if you're young, you're not immune to it in the long run."
In other words, their risk factors didn't surface until whatever 40, 50, 60 or something like that."

"And we have to turn that and start to focus on the things that will keep us healthy and out of the health care system if we hope to fund anything else down the road."
"Certainly the fitness data that we present is . consistent with the doomsday kind of projections that they have here," said Tremblay, who was not involved in the Heart and Stroke Foundation report.
"Given that we as a society are becoming overweight, out of shape and not physically active, we're starting to see these risk factors emerge in younger individuals," said Abramson, who is a Heart and Stroke Foundation spokesperson.
"And that Nike Free 4.0 Flyknit 2016 may happen biologically at slightly different ages, but it's something that we would have never predicted in the last 15 years."
She said that among young women, more than 50 per cent lead an inactive lifestyle and about a quarter are smokers. And the trends for high blood pressure and diabetes in this group are alarming, she added.
The organization drew on data from Statistics Canada's Canadian Community Health Survey to paint a picture of how Canadian adults stack up, health and fitness wise. They looked at the proportion of Canadians who are physically inactive, overweight or obese, who smoke or have high blood pressure or diabetes.
Samis said he is confident the federal government will fund the plan. And he said there are small signs of progress schools have cut out junk food and governments have increased their support for physical education in schools. But a big picture approach is needed, he said.
of the working groups that devised the action plan.
Similar strategies for combating cancer, lung disease, diabetes and mental health problems have been adopted and funded by the federal government. But the cardiovascular disease plan is conspicuous in its failure so far to secure federal support, given that heart disease remains the Number 1 killer of Canadians, said Tremblay, who was on one Nike Free Rn Flyknit Gs
The group took the opportunity to push for federal endorsement of an action plan for heart health that the group released in February of last year.
"What we're asking for is a more comprehensive and co ordinated approach, so that no matter where you live in the country, your risk factors are being addressed."
But the foundation's portrait is in sync with that drawn as a result of a massive effort to get factual information on the health and fitness of Canadians by weighing and measuring them and subjecting them to fitness tests, said Mark Tremblay, director of healthy active living and obesity research at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario and a lead researcher on the Canadian Health Measures Survey.
"For a number of provinces, over 40 per cent and moving towards 50 per cent of provincial budgets are now focused on health care after we become sick," he said at a news conference.
